One Thing You Can Do to Be More Spiritual

If you want to become more spiritual, you do not necessarily need another book, a new belief system, or a complicated ritual.
Try giving the first few minutes of your day to your spiritual life.
Before the phone, the news, the email, the chores, and everybody else’s demands begin competing for your attention, do something that brings you back to yourself and to whatever you consider sacred.
Pray. Meditate. Read something spiritually meaningful. Write in a journal. Sit quietly with a cup of coffee and simply become present.
The activity matters less than the intention behind it.
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.” — Eckhart Tolle
Give Your Spirit the First Few Minutes of the Day
Our lives can get hectic before we have even had a chance to decide what kind of day we want to have. Phones, messages, news, work, family responsibilities, and the endless stream of things asking for our attention can quickly take over.
That is why I like the idea of beginning with something spiritual. Give yourself 15 quiet minutes before the outside world starts directing your attention. This may require getting up a little earlier, but believe me, it is time well spent.
If having a regular place would help you protect that time, you can also set up a simple meditation space at home. It does not need to be elaborate. A quiet chair or corner can be enough.
Choose a Practice That Actually Means Something to You
Your practice might be prayer, meditation, reading the Bible or another spiritually meaningful book, journaling, gratitude, visualization, or simply sitting quietly and listening inward.
It does not have to be tied to a particular faith. Spirituality is personal, and part of finding your spiritual path is discovering the practices that genuinely help you feel connected rather than doing something merely because somebody else says you should.
Why Morning Works So Well
Starting early does two useful things. First, there is a better chance you can have a few uninterrupted minutes before the day becomes busy. Second, it gives you an intention to carry into everything that follows.
A morning practice cannot guarantee that the rest of your day will be peaceful. People may still irritate you. Plans may still fall apart. You may still get stuck in traffic or receive an email you wish you had never opened.
But when you have already spent a few minutes becoming quiet and intentional, it can be easier to remember that state later instead of letting every interruption decide how you are going to feel.
Do Not Turn Spiritual Practice Into Another Chore
The point is not to create another item you can feel guilty about missing.
Some mornings you may meditate for 30 minutes. Other mornings you may have five minutes to sit with your coffee, breathe, pray, and remind yourself how you want to move through the day. What matters is returning to the practice.
Spiritual growth is not about performing spirituality perfectly. It is about becoming more conscious of who you are, what you are choosing, and how you are showing up in your own life.
Try It for the Next Few Days
Your assignment for the next few days:
Choose one spiritual activity and give it at least 15 quiet minutes in the morning. Pray, meditate, journal, read something meaningful, sit in silence, or choose another practice that nourishes your spirit. Do it before the rest of the day takes over. Then pay attention to whether anything changes in how you think, respond, and move through the day.
You do not need a guru or a new belief system to become more spiritual. Start by making room for your spiritual life in the life you already have. A few intentional minutes each morning can be a simple place to begin.
