Why Year-Round Daylight Saving Time Is a Bad Idea

Many people support year-round daylight saving time because they imagine brighter, summer-like evenings throughout the year without the inconvenience of changing the clocks.
Permanent DST would move the winter sunset one hour later on the clock, but it would not create a single additional minute of daylight. Winter days would remain short, the sun would remain lower in the sky, and the available evening light would still be much weaker than the long, bright summer evenings supporters often picture.
The price of that later sunset would be an hour-later sunrise.
Winter mornings are already colder and more difficult for many people. Permanent DST would combine those low temperatures with extended darkness, creating dark, cold mornings when people are waking up, commuting, beginning outdoor work, and sending children to school.
If the sun normally rises at 7:00 a.m. and sets at 5:00 p.m., permanent DST would change those clock times to 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The evening may look slightly better on paper, but the morning would become significantly darker during one of the coldest parts of the day.

Permanent DST Does Not Create More Daylight
The length of a winter day is determined by Earth’s seasonal position and tilt in relation to the sun, not by the numbers displayed on a clock.
Permanent DST would move sunrise and sunset one hour later, but it could not reproduce summer conditions. Winter sunlight remains limited in duration and intensity. An hour-later sunset in December is not equivalent to an hour of summer evening light.
We can decide where winter daylight falls on the clock. We cannot increase the amount of daylight available.
Why Morning Light Matters
Morning light helps synchronize the body’s internal clock with the natural day. It supports waking, alertness, sleep timing, mood, and the daily hormonal rhythms connected with sleeping and waking.
Permanent DST delays morning light while adding more light late in the day. This combination makes it harder to wake naturally, encourages later sleep, and creates a larger mismatch between biological time and social schedules.
That tradeoff becomes especially important during winter, when morning light is already limited and seasonal depression is more common. The answer is not to take more light away from the morning. The connection between morning light, circadian alignment, sleep, and mood helps explain why the timing of daylight matters.

Health and Mood Consequences
Both the spring clock change and continued observation of DST interfere with sleep and circadian alignment.
Research links DST and delayed morning light with sleep deprivation, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, stroke, depression, anxiety, and worsening mood symptoms.
People already dealing with sleep problems, seasonal depression, anxiety, cardiovascular conditions, or other health concerns may be especially affected by chronic circadian disruption.
Permanent DST would not eliminate that disruption. It would extend the delayed-sunrise and evening-light pattern throughout the winter. The supporting public-health research and cited sources document these effects.
Safety, Workplace Injuries, and Lost Productivity
Dark winter mornings are not merely inconvenient. They combine low visibility with colder temperatures, frost, ice, snow, and the morning rush. Under permanent DST, more children, commuters, pedestrians, and outdoor workers would begin their day before sunrise while also dealing with winter weather.
The spring transition to DST is associated with slower reaction times and increased traffic deaths. Workplace injuries also rise after the clock moves forward, and those injuries result in more missed workdays.
Sleep loss and circadian disruption can also reduce concentration, workplace performance, and productivity while increasing absenteeism.
The evidence includes traffic and public-safety consequences as well as workplace, productivity, and economic costs connected with DST and clock changes.
Does DST Really Save Energy?
The energy-saving argument for daylight saving time is largely outdated.
Moving an hour of daylight from morning to evening may reduce some evening lighting, but it also creates an additional hour of morning darkness. Lighting and energy use are shifted rather than eliminated.
Modern energy consumption also involves far more than lighting. Later summer sunsets can increase air-conditioning use and evening driving, while darker winter mornings can increase lighting and heating demand.
Any national savings attributed to DST are negligible, and some studies have found that DST increases electricity use. The clock cannot change the number of dark hours. It can only change when the energy is consumed. The energy and environmental evidence shows why shifting daylight does not necessarily reduce overall demand.
The United States Tried Permanent DST in 1974
The United States adopted emergency year-round daylight saving time in 1974. The proposal was initially popular, but support fell sharply after people experienced the dark winter mornings.
Children traveled to school before sunrise, public opposition grew, and Congress ended the experiment early by restoring winter standard time.
The experience demonstrated the difference between imagining permanent DST during brighter seasons and living with it during winter. The history of permanent DST shows how support collapsed after the policy became a winter reality.
Why the 1974 Experiment Still Matters Today
Supporters sometimes dismiss 1974 because American culture and technology have changed during the past 50 years.
Our phones, cars, schools, and working habits may be different, but the astronomical tradeoff has not changed. Earth’s seasonal relationship with the sun is the same. Winter days are still short. The winter sun is still lower in the sky. Moving the clock forward would still delay sunrise by one hour.
Modern technology cannot replace the biological role of morning sunlight or eliminate the risks of sending people onto roads and sidewalks before sunrise.
The 1974 experiment remains valid because it tested the same clock policy under the same winter-light conditions being debated today.
Where the Law Stands in 2026
As of August 2026, most of the United States continues observing daylight saving time from the second Sunday in March through the first Sunday in November.
Federal law allows states to exempt themselves from DST and remain on permanent standard time. States cannot independently adopt permanent DST under current law. The U.S. Department of Transportation explains the federal rules governing time zones and daylight saving time.

Why Permanent Standard Time Is the Better Choice
The twice-yearly clock change is disruptive, and it should end. But permanent daylight saving time is not the only way to stop changing the clocks.
Permanent standard time provides a stable year-round clock while keeping morning light more closely aligned with the times people wake, commute, attend school, and begin work.
We cannot change how much sunlight winter provides. We can only decide where that limited light falls on the clock.
Permanent DST sacrifices valuable morning light and creates darker, colder starts to the winter day in exchange for an evening hour that is shorter, weaker, and far less useful than the summer-like conditions its supporters imagine. Permanent standard time is the healthier, safer, and more natural choice.

Tell federal and state lawmakers that ending clock changes should mean restoring permanent standard time, not adopting permanent DST.
